Notes: In the past new technology enabled the emergence of new cultural forms.
Today new technologies are subordinate to the repetition and refurbishment of old cultural forms.
- Revivalism and Pastiche
We have unlearned the creation of the future.
In order to recapture and relive disappearing hopes for the future, we return to the past, trying to rediscover how the future used to be imagined.
Chirstopher Nolan - Memento - Only way of orintating himself is via pictures and notes and tattoos.
We are more excited about revisiting the past then creating new futures
- Video games / pixel art /
New technology is used to recreate and imitate old kinds of technology.
Why do we find these aesthetics so appealing, and why now -
What are these trends a symptom of? what does it say about our current condition, and state we are currently in.
- We are part of culture, that can only find appeal in preestablished cultural modes, in rehashes, caging ourselves in the safety of the familiar.
'I don't usually comment on youtube but i find these ideas very interesting. What strikes me the most is the framing - the sense that we have "lost" the future, that postmodern neoliberal society is incapable of creating new cultural forms and is stuck with imagining the future through the eyes of the past (and, implicitly, that we are worse off for it - hopefully I don't have to clarify that).'
